“The Tough Love Guide to Treating Your Business Like a Business”
-
Chapter 1
-
Introduction
Hi, I’m Kelly, Founder & CEO of Avenue Equestrian. I’ve helped build Fortune 500 businesses as well as those getting off the ground, and now I help equestrian business owners at all stages become confident leaders with a clear roadmap to success: in finances, leadership, relationships, and more.
-
Lesson 1: Plan & prioritize, prioritize, prioritize.
Treat your job… like a job, but like, a really fun one
-
Lesson 2: Work comes first. Set your non-negotiable work
Once you’re clear on what you’re working toward, you have to actually put in the work. Setting non-negotiable work hours is essential to getting this work done.
-
Lesson 3: Balance work and pace
Being the CEO means that you have more flexibility with your leisure time — like riding in the middle of the day, if you want — and it’s an important part of your life to have balance.
-
Lesson 4: Don’t do things for “fake productivity”
Fake productivity, or busy work, is super common. We all find ourselves guilty of it from time to time.
-
-
Chapter 2
-
Lesson 1: We're here to make money
We’re here to make money. Yes, even if you’re working on something you love or are passionate about, which, for many of us, is horses.
-
Lesson 2: Figure out what you're good at making money in.
Let’s have a real talk about something that's often overlooked but absolutely crucial for our success: finding and embracing our business superpowers.
-
Lesson 3: Pricing
Everybody struggles with determining their pricing. How you determine the price of your product or services depends on many factors — your costs, your goals, your time, the market, and your target audience.
-
-
Chapter 3
-
Lesson 1: The need-to-know nitty-gritty (metrics!)
You knew this was coming… The part where we have to open up bank statements. If the thought of opening your banking app makes you want to throw your phone away, this chapter is especially for you.
-
Lesson 2: Data can be scary, but it’s wildly beneficial.
-
Lesson 3: Lesson 3: The future isn’t certain, but you can make it more clear with forecasting
Business forecasting is the art (and some science) of predicting your business’s future performance.
-
-
Chapter 4
-
Chapter 5
-
Lesson 1: The simple power of delegating
Outsourcing can feel overwhelming, confusing, and expensive. But it's a CRITICAL part of business growth. It’s not just a buzzword; outsourcing is a savvy move reshaping how businesses like yours thrive.
-
Lesson 2: Ace clear, transparent communication
Effective communication is the lifeblood of any business. Whether it's with your team, your clients, or your suppliers, clarity and transparency are non-negotiable.
-
Lesson 3: Have difficult conversations
Conflict. That uncomfortable, often avoided aspect of business that tends to make us squirm in our seats. When building a business, conflict is bound to arise.
-
Lesson 4: Practice saying no
You also have to practice hearing no.
-
-
Chapter 6
-
Lesson 1: Build resilience… Don’t give up!
Let's face it — entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. It's a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows, twists and turns. But high performers embrace the challenges head-on, viewing setbacks as opportunities for growth. Stay flexible, pivot when necessary, and never lose sight of your end goal.
-
Lesson 2: Adopt a high-performer mindset
As entrepreneurs, we're no strangers to the hustle – but what separates the good from the great?
-
-
Chapter 7
-
Lesson 1: Partnerships
-
Lesson 2: Do You Need a Coach or Mentor?
Working with a coach or mentor is make-or-break for a lot of people. I don’t know many people who have been able to build a successful business without leaning on others for advice and support. There are so many ways you can benefit from a coach.
-
-
Chapter 8
-
Lesson 1: Change Course When You Want
Want to know what one of my favorite things about running my own business is? The power to change course whenever I want.
-
Lesson 2: Even small changes matter — Micro-adjustments
In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, the difference between good and great often boils down to those tiny tweaks we make along the way.

I'm Kelly, Founder & CEO of Avenue Equestrian, an endeavor born from a profound love for the equestrian world and a strategic mind honed through diverse experiences in leadership, business development, and transformative consultancy.
My journey began when I was 6. Riding lessons with my stepmom turned into a lifelong passion. Growing up in a Hunter/Jumper barn in New Jersey, I was a definite horse girl, spending every minute I could at the barn. I rode all through college, and then had a brief hiatus from the industry as I began my professional career.
Missing horses tremendously, a gift from my husband got me back in the saddle and I was instantly hooked again. I began riding regularly again and noticed an incredible opportunity to combine my two loves: horses and strategy.
Fast forward to 2021 and I quit my full-time job at a startup to really dive into Avenue Equestrian. I also had the opportunity to jump further back into the equestrian world, joining the Aureliano Equestrian team as assistant Barn Manager and Assistant Trainer. While there I orchestrated the seamless operations of a competitive show barns, managing the well-being of horses and riders alike while devising winning strategies for optimum performance.
